GaN and Sil chargers - get to know them

The whole world is looking for new solutions to replace silicon unipolar transistors, which are used, for example, in chargers for mobile phones and laptops. These have been in use since the 1980s and now seem to be nearing their peak performance.


One of the first technologies to be offered as a replacement for silicon is GaN technology based on gallium nitride.

Gallium Nitride is a chemical compound composed of nitrogen and gallium that was originally used to make LEDs. It allows much higher power to be transmitted, making it more efficient and generating less heat. This reduces the need for cooling and makes it possible to achieve lower weight and dimensions. Thanks to these unique properties, it has become a popular element for the production of chargers.

The GaN charger uses less power but is more powerful, so it charges phones much faster than a silicon-based charger. It is significantly lighter and more compact, which allows you to take it with you everywhere and charge a laptop with it, for example. Another material that has recently started to appear in connection with charging is Super silicon. Its advantages are in density, thermal conductivity and conversion efficiency. In the future, we can expect more charger processing technologies to be developed. Individual companies are already competing with each other to see who can come up with more power and a shorter charging time.
